Resolution to Approve Street Closure for Washtenaw County Climate Strike on Friday, September 20, 2019 from 9:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Memorandum

Attached for your consideration is a resolution to approve the closing of Washington Street from Fletcher to Thayer for the Washtenaw County Climate Strike on Friday, September 20, 2019 from 9:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.  The actual event takes place from 11:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. with the additional time to be used for set-up and break-down. 

 

The Sponsor, Washtenaw County Climate Strike, is teaming with youth and adults, institutional and grassroots organizations, climate-focused and social justice groups to come together as a unified front to demand change for the future.  The agenda for the day is as follows:

 

                     11:00 AM-12:00 PM: Students and workers walk out of their classes and offices and make their way to North Ingalls Mall, where there is music playing on stage.

                     12:00-12:30 PM: Speakers address the climate crisis and how people can take action.

                     12:30-2:30 PM: Two hour-long workshop periods, where attendees break off and choose which of the four workshops per period they want to attend.

                     2:30-3:30 PM: Attendees come back together for music and closing speeches.

 

The applicant has posted this event on social media and the City of Ann Arbor will post on its road and lane closure website and announce through GovDelivery.  The event is being coordinated with all relevant City service areas for the purposes of traffic control and for the protection of the health and safety of the participants and the general public.

Whereas, The City of Ann Arbor has received an application from the Washtenaw County Climate Strike to close Washington Street from Thayer to Fletcher on September 20, 2019 from 9:00 A.M. until 7:00 P.M. for the Washtenaw County Climate Strike; and

 

Whereas, The special event has been coordinated with the University of Michigan, the University of Michigan Police and City of Ann Arbor Police to ensure the safety of the participants and the public;

 

RESOLVED, That City Council approve the closing Washington Street from Thayer to Fletcher on September 20, 2019 from 9:00 A.M. until 7:00 P.M. for the Washtenaw County Climate Strike special event.
