PROCLAMATION
Honoring Nick Shannon
September 6, 2011
 
 
WHEREAS,      Nick Shannon, at the age of 16, has made the kind of impact on his community that most civically engaged adults never achieve; and
 
WHEREAS,      Nick Shannon, during his sophomore year of High School, was selected to be a member of the Ann Arbor Community Foundation's Youth Council and was subsequently appointed to the foundation's Board of Trustees, the youngest trustee to be appointed in the history of the program; and
 
WHEREAS,      Nick Shannon founded the Ann Arbor Teens for Kids (AATFK), a non-profit service organization working to engage young people in community service, which has since grown to 40 active members who have volunteered for thousands of hours of community service; and
 
WHEREAS,      Nick Shannon was selected by a committee of national experts working on behalf of the National Civic League at the 2011 All-America City Awards, as the winner of the 2011 All-America City Youth Award .
 
 
NOW THEREFORE, I, John Hieftje, Mayor of Ann Arbor, Michigan, in recognition of these personal and volunteer accomplishments, conducted to the greater good of everyone in our community, do hereby proclaim a commemoration of Nick Shannon on September 6, 2011, in the City of Ann Arbor.

PROCLAMATION
Alan Tanabe and The Thunderbolts
September 6, 2011
 
 
WHEREAS,      Alan Tanabe and The Thunderbolts have dedicated themselves to volunteering in the assistance of the Ann Arbor Parks; and
 
 
WHEREAS,      Alan Tanabe and The Thunderbolts have worked with the GIVE 365 Friends of the Field Program to improve the ball fields at Southeast Area Park by removing weeds and overgrowth around the infield and bleachers, removing trash from the park space, raking the ball fields and removing rocks and debris; and
 
 
WHEREAS,      their consistent participation with the GIVE 365 Friends of the Field Program has made a positive impact on both the park space and the users of the fields; and  
 
 
WHEREAS,      The City of Ann Arbor appreciates the tireless work of volunteers in assistance of our parks.
 
 
NOW THEREFORE, I, John Hieftje, Mayor of Ann Arbor, Michigan, in recognition of these personal and volunteer endeavors, conducted to the greater good of our community, do hereby proclaim a commemoration of Alan Tanabe and The Thunderbolts on September 6, 2011, in the City of Ann Arbor.

PROCLAMATION
Hunger Action Month
September, 2011
 
WHEREAS,      hunger and poverty are issues of grave concern in the United States, the State of Michigan, and the City of Ann Arbor; and
 
WHEREAS,      the City of Ann Arbor is committed to taking steps to raise awareness about the need to combat hunger in every part of our city and to provide additional resources that citizens of Ann Arbor need; and
 
WHEREAS,      the City of Ann Arbor is committed to working with Food Gatherers in educating people about the role and importance of food banks in addressing hunger and raising awareness of the need to devote more resources and attention to hunger issues; and
 
WHEREAS,      more than 43,900 individuals in Ann Arbor rely on food provided by the members of the Food gatherers annually; and
 
WHEREAS,      Food Gatherers distributed more than 5 million pounds of food in 2010 through its network of food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other community organizations; and
 
WHEREAS,      food banks across the country, including the members of Food Gatherers, the Food Bank of South Central Michigan, West Michigan Food Bank, Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, Mid-Michigan Food Bank and Forgotten Harvest will host numerous events throughout the month of September to bring awareness and attention to encourage involvement in efforts to end hunger in their community.
 
NOW THEREFORE, I, John Hieftje, Mayor of Ann Arbor, Michigan, do hereby proclaim September as Hunger Action Month in our City of Ann Arbor, and encourage citizens to participate in these events and do their part to end hunger.
