Resolution to Approve Contract with Michigan Department of Transportation for Airfield Markings, Signage, Energy Upgrades, and Completion of Property Survey and Map at the Ann Arbor Municipal Airport ($101,200.00)
Memorandum
Attached for your review and approval is a resolution to approve a grant contract with the Michigan Department of Transportation-Bureau of Aeronautics (MDOT-Aero) in the amount of $101,200.00 for the completion of two projects at the airport.

The first project is the airfield markings, signage and energy upgrade project to meet the current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements for pavement markings and signage. The current airfield signage does not adequately identify all taxiways at the airport which hinders an air traffic controller’s ability to provide taxiing instructions for those unfamiliar with the airport layout. The project will upgrade existing airfield signage and add additional signage where necessary to meet the FAA design requirements. The use of LED lighting in this signage will also reduce operating and maintenance costs to the airport.

This project will also upgrade pavement markings on the airfield. These paint markings provide guidance to aircraft users based on the type of marking. These markings include designations of movement and non-movement areas, hold lines and other informational guidance to aircraft pilots. The energy upgrades part of the project includes the conversion of lighted airfield signage to LED and also making the airfield lighting mic-controlled after the air traffic control tower is closed. Airfield lighting is currently left on all night long. Mic-controlled lighting allows a pilot to activate the airfield lights prior to landing via radio. The lights stay on for a pre-determined time to allow the pilot to taxi to their location and then shut off. Since the airport gets minimal traffic after dark, this change should have a very positive impact on operational costs. T...
