Title
Annual Survey of Traffic Calming Projects Constructed in 2007 and 2008
Memorandum
It has been one year or more after construction of traffic calming projects for Traver Road and Starwick Drive. Following the review of the post construction traffic speeds and the feedback form the affected residents, the 2007 and 2008 traffic calming projects have been successful in meeting their objectives; reducing speeds and satisfying the street’s residents.
The Starwick Drive Traffic Calming project, between Pontiac and Barton, consisted of three (3) speed humps and one (1) partial neckdown. It was constructed in the summer/ fall of 2007 and had a lengthy delay in getting post construction speed data collected. The Traver Road project, Pear to John A Woods consisted of the installation of two (2) speed humps in the summer of 2008.
For Starwick Drive the 85th percentile speed was 34 mph before the traffic calming project and the post construction survey showed an 85th percentile speed of 20 mph. Similarly improvement was seen on Traver Road with a pre construction 85th percentile speed of 31 mph and a post construction speed of 25 mph.
In addition to the speed study above, we surveyed the residents in the area of the projects to learn about the residents’ level of satisfaction with the traffic calming improvements. The survey post cards asked if the residents were satisfied with the traffic calming devices installed on their street, and provided space for comment.
The survey cards were mailed to the affected residents on Starwick Drive (35) and Traver Street (21). The following table summarizes the survey results.
