Title
Resolution to Approve Alley Closing for Jazz in the Alley Special Event - Thursday, August 4, 2011
Memorandum
Attached for your consideration is a resolution to approve the closing of 40 feet of the alley on the north side of E. Liberty Street between S. Main Street and S. Fourth Avenue from 4:00 P.M. on Thursday, August 4, 2011 to 1:00 A.M. on Friday, August 5, 2011 to stage Jazz in the Alley. The 40 foot section to be closed would run from the sidewalk to the rear of the Kilwin’s Chocolate Shoppe. The event itself will run from 7:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M. with the additional time requested used for set-up prior to and cleanup following the event.

The event will consist of 2-3 jazz bands playing from 7:00 - 11:00 P.M on Thursday, August 4, 2011 in the alley. The idea for using the alley came about because there are few, if any, remaining jazz clubs in the Ann Arbor area and the acoustics from the surrounding buildings will work well with the jazz music. The alley location is similar to “Art in the Alley” which has taken place successfully in Detroit for artists and supporters for several years.

Kilwin’s Chocolate Shoppe is sponsoring the event to benefit the Rick Burgess Music Scholarship. This is a music scholarship available to juniors and seniors in the Ann Arbor Public Schools interested in all genres of jazz music.

The sponsor agrees to obtain all necessary permits, to provide evidence of proper liability insurance as required, to comply with all City regulations governing the use of the streets and alleys, and will reimburse the City for all event expenses.

Notification of the alley closing will be provided through the City’s website.
