Proclamation Honoring Stephen K. Postema on the Occasion of His Retirement

Memorandum

WHEREAS,                     City Attorney Stephen K. Postema has served the City of Ann Arbor as a dedicated and exemplary public servant during his tenure at the City; and

 

WHEREAS,                     City Attorney Postema is an alum of Harvard University and graduated from the University Wisconsin Law School in 1985 before starting off on a truly distinguished legal career. City Attorney Postema was a partner at Bodman LLP, where he specialized in commercial and employment litigation and practiced regularly in the Federal Courts, the State Circuit Courts, and the Michigan Court of Appeals. He received the Distinguished Supreme Court Brief Award in 1998 for a Whistleblowers Act case he successfully argued before the Michigan Supreme Court; and

WHEREAS,                     City Attorney Postema began with the City in 2003, providing over 19 years of exceptional service to the City of Ann Arbor; and

WHEREAS,                      City Attorney Postema has served as an election commissioner, the City Prosecutor; and the chief legal advisor to: two Mayors, over forty City Council members, five City Administrators; six Police Chiefs, six Fire Chiefs, four Human Resource Directors and countless Service Area Administrators; and 

WHEREAS,                     City Attorney Postema as has a state-wide reputation as a municipal lawyer; He has served on the board and is the President of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys, the Past-Chairman of the Michigan Municipal League’s Legal Defense Fund; and is the recipient of the Outstanding Service Award from the Michigan Municipal League at its 2012 Capital Conference for his work on the MAMA’s legislative committee. He was also selected as a “Leader in the Law” by Michigan Lawyers Weekly in 2013; and

WHEREAS,                     City Attorney Postema’s extensive legal knowledge, rigorous analysis and advice and his leadership skills have been a gift to the City of Ann Arbor. Under his leadership the City’s legal department has established important legal precedent in both state and federal courts. His ability to attract, retain and inspire staff coupled with his effective management of litigation will add to his legacy of superior service in the years to come; and

WHEREAS,                     City Attorney Postema is the longest serving City Attorney in the history of Ann Arbor.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Christopher Taylor, Mayor of Ann Arbor, Michigan, do hereby recognize and thank Stephen K. Postema for his contributions and dedicated service to the City of Ann Arbor and proclaim March 7, 2022 as a day to honor his retirement from the City of Ann Arbor.
