PROCLAMATION
Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October 2020
WHEREAS, Intimate partner domestic violence is a PATTERN of coercive behavior used by people to control their intimate partners. It encompasses abusive tactics including, but not limited to, physical and sexual violence; threats of violence; economic, emotional and psychological abuse; and/or the use of privilege; and
WHEREAS, Perpetrators of domestic violence often cause long-lasting physical and emotional trauma to individuals, families in our community. Exposure to violence in the home has been correlated to mental, social, and emotional damage that can affect our children’s developmental growth, self-esteem and sense of security; and
WHEREAS, An estimated one in three women and one in ten men will be subjected to domestic violence in their lifetime; and
WHEREAS, Domestic violence knows no boundaries of race, age, sexual orientation, gender, or economic status. Domestic violence is an indiscriminate public health concern in every community; and
WHEREAS, The City of Ann Arbor appreciates and acknowledges all those individuals and service providers who have dedicated their efforts to supporting those most impacted by intimate partner violence by providing advocacy, services for survivors, and accountability to perpetrators; and
WHEREAS, The City of Ann Arbor will remain committed to a coordinated community response to end domestic violence in our community.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Christopher Taylor, Mayor of the City of Ann Arbor, do hereby proclaim October 2020 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
