Resolution to Appoint Gerard Markey as the Ann Arbor City Assessor
Memorandum
The attached resolution provides for the appointment of Gerard (Jerry) Markey as the Ann Arbor City Assessor, effective July 22, 2019.
In September 2018, Council appointed Mark Perry to serve as the City Assessor on an interim basis to fill the vacancy created by David Petrak’s retirement. Staff engaged in a recruiting effort to fill the City Assessor position on a permanent basis and recommends Mr. Markey to fill the position. Mr. Markey has been a State Certified Level IV Assessor since 1992. He has served as the Equalization Director for Livingston and Marquette counties, worked as a corporate property appraiser, and is presently serving as the City Assessor for Taylor, Michigan.
Staff recommends Council appoint Mr. Markey to serve as the City Assessor.

Whereas, Mark Perry is presently serving as the City Assessor on an interim basis until the City could appoint an Assessor who assumes such office indefinitely;
Whereas, Staff engaged in a recruiting process for an Assessor and recommended Mr. Gerard Markey to fill the position;
Whereas, Section 12:1(b) of the Ann Arbor City Charter provides that the City Assessor shall be appointed by the City Council on recommendation of the City Administrator;
Whereas, Mr. Markey is a State Certified Level IV Assessor and is presently serving as the City Assessor for Taylor, Michigan; and
Whereas, The City Administrator hereby gives his recommendation to City Council that Mr. Markey be appointed as the City Assessor effective July 22, 2019.
RESOLVED, That City Council hereby appoints Mr. Gerard Markey as the City of Ann Arbor Assessor, effective July 22, 2019;
RESOLVED, That the City Clerk is hereby directed to mail Mr. Markey a certificate of such appointment in accordance with 12.5 of the Charter;
RESOLVED, That prior to entering upon the duties of the Assessor, Mr. Markey shall take the oath required under Section 12.7 of the Charter and file the same with the City Clerk; and
RESOLVED, That upon Mr. Markey taking such oath, Mark Perry shall cease to be the City’s Interim Assessor.
