Proclamation Relay for Life Days June 20 & 21, 2009

Memorandum

Whereas, One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime; and

Whereas, More than 11 million cancer survivors and countless Americans who have avoided cancer are a testament to the progress being made in the fight against cancer; and

Whereas, Relay For Life is the signature activity of the American Cancer Society, celebrating cancer survivors and caregivers, remembering those lost; and empowering individuals and communities to fight back against cancer; and

Whereas, Money raised during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Ann Arbor helps support research, education, advocacy, and patient services; and

Whereas, Relay For Life helps fund more than $100 million in cancer research each year, including nearly $14 million in Ann Arbor.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, John Hieftje, Mayor of Ann Arbor, do hereby proclaim Saturday June 20 & Sunday June 21, 2009 as Relay For Life Days, and, recognize the important efforts of the American Cancer Society, and do hereby encourage all citizens to actively participate in the Relay For Life of Ann Arbor at Concordia University as a show of support to fight the disease, to increase awareness, and to honor cancer survivors.
