Resolution to Appoint Mike Kennedy as the City of Ann Arbor Fire Chief
Memorandum
The attached resolution provides for the appointment of Mike Kennedy as the Ann Arbor Fire Chief, effective May 1, 2018.
Mike Kennedy joined the Ann Arbor Fire Department as an Assistant Fire Chief in December of 2017, following a state-wide search. He was selected for the position of Fire Chief following an internal search that involved the City Administrator, Fire Department Personnel, Service Area Administrators, and other City staff.
Prior to joining the Ann Arbor Fire Department, Mr. Kennedy simultaneously served as the Fire Chief of the South Lyon Fire Department and as a Senior Emergency Management Specialist with the University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security.
Prior to his positions with South Lyon and at the University of Michigan, Mr. Kennedy progressed through the ranks at Brighton Area Fire Authority, serving as a cadet, firefighter, sergeant, and lieutenant. In addition, Mr. Kennedy previously served as a Lecturer/Regional Coordinator at the University of Maryland - Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute
Mike Kennedy holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Michigan and a Master of Public Administration degree from Eastern Michigan University, in addition to a number of other state and national certifications and recognitions.
Mike Kennedy is highly qualified to serve and is recommended to City Council for appointment as Ann Arbor Fire Chief.

Whereas, Mike Kennedy joined the Ann Arbor Fire Department as an Assistant Chief following a state-wide search and was selected for the position of Fire Chief from an internal search;
Whereas, Mike Kennedy holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Michigan, a Master of Public Administration degree from Eastern Michigan University, and numerous other state and national certifications;
Whereas, Section 12:1(b) of the Ann Arbor City Charter provides that the Fire Chief shall be appointed by the City Council on recommendation of the City Administrator; and
Whereas, Mike Kennedy is highly qualified to serve and is recommended to Council for appointment as Ann Arbor’s Fire Chief;
RESOLVED, That City Council does hereby appoint Mike Kennedy as the City of Ann Arbor Fire Chief, effective May 1, 2018.
