Resolution in Favor of a 20-Year License Renewal for Fermi 2

The Ann Arbor Energy Commission passed the following resolution with present members at its February 9, 2016 regular meeting.

Whereas, the City of Ann Arbor recognizes the serious threat posed by climate change, and is committed to reducing its carbon footprint;

Whereas, on December 17, 2012, the Ann Arbor City Council adopted the Ann Arbor Climate Action Plan which identifies steps to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to meet current short-term goals, and to set mid- and long-range targets for emissions reductions into the future;

Whereas, electricity generation accounts for more than 30% of GHG emissions in the U.S. [1];

Whereas, Ann Arbor receives the vast majority of its electricity from the local utility, DTE Energy;

Whereas, the Enrico Fermi Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 2 (Fermi 2) is currently the only nuclear power plant in DTE Energy’s portfolio, providing over 15% of DTE Energy’s generation, and over 80% of its emissions-free portfolio [2];

Whereas, supporting emissions-free electricity sources such as Fermi 2 is consistent with the carbon-reduction goals outlined in the Ann Arbor Climate Action Plan;

Whereas, the continued operation of Fermi 2 benefits the city of Ann Arbor, and the SE Michigan region, by providing abundant, inexpensive, and emissions-free electricity;

Whereas, the current operating license for Fermi 2 extends to 2025, and the process for a 20-year license extension has already begun;

Resolved, The Ann Arbor Energy Commission supports the relicensing of Fermi 2
