Proclamation
Earth Day
April 16, 2012

Whereas, the natural resources of the state and nation should be used wisely for the future, and should be the concern of government at the local, state and national levels; and
Whereas, April 22, 2012 is the 42nd anniversary of the international observation of Earth Day, which was launched in Ann Arbor on March 10-14, 1970; and
Whereas, the City of Ann Arbor fosters environmental stewardship through citizen involvement in numerous commissions and programs including the Environmental Commission, the Energy Commission, the Mayor’s Energy Challenge, Natural Areas Preservation programs, and events including the Green Fair and Huron River Day; and
Whereas, the City of Ann Arbor has adopted 10 environmental goals and tracks 60 indicators on the City’s State of our Environment website, and via the City’s Sustainability Plan, Climate Action Plan, Solid Waste Plan, Transportation Plan, and the Urban & Community Forest Management Plan; and
Whereas, the city supports the youth outdoor education programs at park facilities, day camps, classroom visits, Michigan Green Schools certification, and an in cooperation with
Ann Arbor Public school environmental education field trips; and

Whereas, the City of Ann Arbor joins with the national Earth Day Network to recognize that environmental education helps youth develop the necessary skills and expertise to address the environmental and economic challenges ahead and helps support future citizens involvement in government decision making.

Now, Therefore, I, John Hieftje, Mayor of Ann Arbor, do hereby proclaim Saturday April 22nd as Earth Day in Ann Arbor, Michigan and recognize the local environmental non-profits that are continuing the environmental tradition of environmental education by coordinating the 42nd Earth Day Festival.
