Community Planning and Zoning in Michigan: This presentation provides a broad overview of the basic concepts of planning and zoning in Michigan. It briefly reviews the historical origins of local planning and zoning, the benefits it has provided, and the problems it has caused, along with current efforts at reform. After discussing some historical concerns that continue through today, it concludes with basic precepts that local governments should follow when planning and zoning and discusses some tensions communities unavoidably confront when doing so.
