Body

Whereas, A well-designed municipal flag can bring joy to a community, unifying its members and instilling civic pride;

Whereas, The lack of widespread usage and display of the current City Flag throughout Ann Arbor indicates that a redesigned flag could benefit the community;

Whereas, The North American Vexillological Association has identified a number of attributes that comprise the Five Basic Principles of Flag Design -- simplicity of design, use of meaningful symbolism, 2 - 3 basic colors, no lettering or seals, and distinctiveness;

RESOLVED, That City Council requests that the Ann Arbor Public Art Commission develop a project plan to design a new City Flag that reflects the five basic principles of flag design. The project plan should include an outline of the public engagement process, schedule, and funding necessary to complete the project as a part of the bicentennial celebration.
