Title
Proclamation for 2018 Gun Violence Awareness Day
Memorandum
PROCLAMATION
Gun Violence Awareness Day
June 1, 2018
WHEREAS, Everyday 96 people are killed by gun violence and there are countless others injured; and
WHEREAS, Americans are 25 times more likely to be murdered with guns than people in other developed countries; and
WHEREAS, Protecting public safety in the communities they serve is the Mayor’s
responsibility; and
WHEREAS, On January 29, 2013, a 15 year-old Chicago teen was killed a week after she walked in the presidential inaugural parade in Washington DC, which started a movement to honor the teen by wearing orange, the color that symbolizes the value of human life that hunters wear so no one accidentally shoots them.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Christopher Taylor, Mayor of the City of Ann Arbor, call upon the citizens of Ann Arbor to observe June 1, 2018 as Gun Violence Awareness Day, and urge our residents to wear orange to show support in the belief that there is more that we can do to end gun violence.
I hereby set my hand and seal
This 1st day of June, 2018
