Whereas, The City of Ann Arbor is committed to the safety of all its citizens and excellence in our transportation system;

Whereas, There are new and innovative technologies including High-intensity Activated crossWalK beacon (HAWK), and Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) that improve the safety of pedestrians crossing major roads and busy streets;

Whereas, Washtenaw Avenue near Tappan Middle School is a four lane street with high demand for school children’s street crossing, and with 20,000 automobiles per day;

Whereas, Washtenaw Avenue (I-94 BL) is a Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) corridor;

Whereas, Plymouth Road is a major corridor in the City of Ann Arbor with over 22,000 automobiles per day, with the University of Michigan North Campus on the south side, many private residential apartment units on the north side, the Islamic Center on the north side and small businesses throughout the area; and

Whereas, Pedestrians on Plymouth Road experience a challenging environment when crossing the street;

RESOLVED, That staff be directed to make recommendations for improvements to the crosswalks throughout the City when advanced technologies are available and where appropriate;

RESOLVED, That staff be directed to begin the process to engage MDOT for pedestrian crossing improvements at Washtenaw Avenue near Tappan Middle School;

RESOLVED, That staff be directed to explore new alternatives for pedestrian crossing improvements at Plymouth Road near the intersection of Beal Avenue; and

RESOLVED, That on or about December 12, 2011 staff presents its findings and recommendations for implementation to the City Coun...
