Resolution Reaffirming City Council's Position on Immigration Enforcement in the City of Ann Arbor

Whereas, The Ann Arbor City Council recognizes that the City of Ann Arbor and the Ann Arbor Police Department have a longstanding and demonstrated history and tradition of commitment to principles of nondiscrimination incorporated in our local, state and federal law, to equal protection under the law and to fair, effective and just policing;
Whereas, The City of Ann Arbor and the Ann Arbor Police Department will continue to welcome all persons and community members regardless of race, creed, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression, ethnicity, religion, disability status, genetic information, protected veteran status, military service, nationality, national origin or citizenship status, and support policies that do the same;
Whereas, It has historically been and will continue to be the practice of the Ann Arbor Police Department and the City of Ann Arbor to recognize that all people present in the City of Ann Arbor are members of the Ann Arbor community and will be treated respectfully and fairly; and
Whereas, The Ann Arbor City Council believes that it is important to expand on the principles expressed in prior resolutions and ordinances, including the City's commitment to equity and inclusion, and to expressly reinforce the AAPD's existing practice and the City Council's position on immigration enforcement in the Ann Arbor community;
RESOLVED, That the City of Ann Arbor officials shall require a judicial warrant prior to detaining an individual or in any manner prolonging the detention of the individual at the request of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or Customs and Border Protection (CBP);
