Resolution to Temporarily Relocate Precinct 5-45 to Bach Elementary School, 600 W. Jefferson Street, for the General Election on Tuesday, November 3, 2026 due to an Ongoing Construction Project at Slauson Middle School
Memorandum
The City Clerk’s Office was notified by the Ann Arbor Public Schools that several buildings regularly used for Election Day polling places would not be available on August 4 for the Primary Election, due to ongoing renovation and construction work at these locations. Temporary assignments for voting were made for the Primary Election. The expectation at that time was that all voters would return to their regular polling place for the November 3 General Election. The City Clerk’s Office has since been notified that Slauson Middle School will continue to be unavailable for the General Election. It is recommended that voters who normally vote at Slauson (5-45) are again temporarily assigned to Bach Elementary for the November 3 General Election. This is the same temporary assignment that was made for the Primary Election.
Location change is as follows:
5-45 Slauson Middle School - move to Bach Elementary, 600 W. Jefferson St.
Upon approval by City Council, the City Clerk’s Office will begin promotion of the temporary change, including a new postcard notice to voters, press releases, website posting, social media, etc. Signage will also be posted at Slauson Middle School alerting voters of the change.
The City Election Commission reviewed and recommended approval of this resolution at their meeting on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
The City Clerk’s Office is requesting that City Council authorize the City Clerk and the City Administrator to take any necessary action to implement this resolution.

Whereas, Michigan Election Law, 168.662 (1), requires that the legislative body in each city shall designate and prescribe the place or places of holding an election in the city, and shall provide a suitable polling place for each precinct for use at each election;
Whereas, Michigan Election Law 168.662 (6), requires that the legislative body of a city shall not establish, move, or abolish a polling place less than 60 days before an election unless necessary because a polling place, early voting site, or central polling place has been damaged, destroyed, or rendered inaccessible or unusable as a polling place, early voting site, or central polling place;
Whereas, The City Clerk’s Office has recently been notified by the Ann Arbor Public Schools staff that Precinct 5-45 (Slauson Middle School) will not be available for the General Election on Tuesday, November 3, 2026 due to ongoing construction projects; and
Whereas, The City Clerk, with the support of the Schools, has located a suitable temporary polling place location for this precinct, focusing on accessible, public facilities and close proximity to the permanent site, in order to minimize any adverse impacts to voters;
RESOLVED, That City Council approve the following temporary relocation of Precinct 5-45 for the November 3, 2026 General Election:
5-45 Slauson Middle School - move to Bach Elementary, 600 W. Jefferson St., and
RESOLVED, That the City Administrator and the City Clerk be authorized to take all action necessary to implement this resolution.
