Title
Resolution to Approve Street Closings for the Ann Arbor Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot - Thursday, November 28, 2019
Memorandum
Attached for your consideration is a resolution to approve the closing of certain streets for the Ann Arbor Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot on Thursday, November 28, 2019 from 5:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
The sponsor, RF Events, is an Ann Arbor based event company. During their 30+ years of event management in SE Michigan they have worked with numerous charity organizations. The Ann Arbor Turkey Trot's main charity partner is the ChadTough Foundation. In 2018 they were able to donate over $6,500 to the foundation as well as supporting Detroit Catholic Central Cross Country and the ECA Student Leaders. The Ann Arbor Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot is entering its 12th year with last year's registration reaching 3,000 runners and walkers coming together to celebrate good health, family and fitness. For the past several years that this event has been in place, there has been little to no negative feedback.
The actual event will begin at 8:30 A.M. and end at 10:00 A.M with the additional time to be used for setup and breakdown. Setup will begin at approximately 5:00 A.M. in the private parking lot at 339 Liberty, and cleanup will be completed by 12:00 P.M. Music and announcements over loudspeakers will begin at 7:30 A.M. at Liberty Plaza. All streets will be reopened as soon as safely possible after the last runners and participants have cleared the affected areas. The following streets will be affected:
• Liberty from Division to Main
• Main from Liberty to Keech
• Keech from Main to Green
• Greene from Keech to Davis
• Davis from Green to Brown
• Brown from Davis to Hill
• Hill from Brown to Division
• Division from Hill to Hoover
• Hoover from Main to Mary
• Mary and Sybill Streets from Hoover to Benjamin
• Benjamin from Mary to Division
• William from Main to Fifth
• Fourth and Fifth Streets from William to Liberty
• Adams from Main to Hill
• Brown from Hill to Hoover
Music will be played from 8:30 A.M. until 9:15 A.M. and racers will be cheered at the aid station south of Hoover and Greene near Keech with a 20’ blow-up and snow machine. A new Tot Trot has been added to the event which will last less than half an hour. In the past the kids have run out and back on the 5k route but it will be a treat to have them run around the block so they can run past the Library.
The Sponsor agrees to obtain all necessary permits, to provide evidence of proper liability insurance as required, to comply with all City regulations governing the use of the streets, and will reimburse the city for all event expenses.
Notification of the street closings will be provided through the City’s website, GovDelivery, press releases, flyers, neighborhood associations, electronic, print and social media.
This event has been coordinated with all relevant City service areas for the purposes of traffic control and for the protection of the health and safety of the participants and the general public.
