PROCLAMATION
Fire Prevention Week
October 6-12, 2019
WHEREAS, The City of Ann Arbor is committed to ensuring the safety and security of its residents and visitors; and
WHEREAS, Home fires killed 2,630 people in the United States in 2017, according to the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®), and fire departments in the United States responded to 357,000 home fires; and
WHEREAS, The fire death rate per 1,000 home fires reported to U.S. fire departments was 4 percent higher in 2017 than in 1980; and
WHEREAS, When the smoke alarm sounds City of Ann Arbor residents may have less than two minutes to escape to safety; and
WHEREAS, A home fire escape plan includes two exits from every room in the home; a path to the outside from each exit; smoke alarms in all required locations; and a meeting place outside where everyone in the home will meet upon exiting; and
WHEREAS, A home fire escape plan should be developed by all members of the household and practiced twice a year to ensure that everyone in the household knows what to do in a real fire situation; and
WHEREAS, The City of Ann Arbor’s firefighters are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fire and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education; and
WHEREAS, The 2019 Fire Prevention WeekTM theme, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!™” effectively serves to remind us that we need to take personal steps to increase our safety from fire.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Christopher Taylor, Mayor of Ann Arbor, Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 6-12, 2019, as Fire Prevention Week, in the City of Ann Arbor and encourage our community to develop a home fire escape plan and to participate in the many public safety activities provided by the City of Ann Arbor’s fire and emergency services during the 2019 Fire Prevention Week.
