Resolution to Approve the Appointment of Nancy Wang as Magistrate of the 15th Judicial District Court
Memorandum
On January 06, 2026, Governor Whitmer announced the appointment of Magistrate Tamara A. Garwood to the 15th Judicial District Court bench, which created a magistrate vacancy.
The magistrate for the 15th District Court is responsible for performing weddings, arraigning and sentencing persons who enter a plea of guilty or no contest to violations of certain state laws and local ordinances, reviewing and issuing search warrants on a 24/7 365 basis, reviewing and issuing misdemeanor and felony arrest warrants, setting bail and accepting bonds, presiding over civil infraction admissions, admissions with explanations and informal hearings, small claims litigation, as well as weekend and holiday arraignments, and assisting the judges of the 15th Judicial District Court as permitted by law.
The judges of the 15th Judicial District Court are permitted by MCL 600.8501(2) to appoint a district court magistrate. MCL 600.8501(2) also requires that the appointment of the district court magistrate be approved by the City of Ann Arbor.
Budget/Funds Impact: Funding for this position is available in the approved FY26 & FY27 Court budgets.
Accordingly, the 15th Judicial District Court requests that Ann Arbor City Council approve the appointment of Nancy Wang to serve as the 15th Judicial District Court Magistrate in accordance with MCL 600.8501(2).

Whereas, MCL 600.8501(2) authorizes the judges of the 15th Judicial District to appoint one or more magistrates to carry out duties set forth by statute;
Whereas, MCL 600.8501(2) also requires that the appointment of a magistrate be approved by the Ann Arbor City Council before assuming the duties of the office of magistrate;
Whereas, Funding is available within the Court’s existing FY 26 & FY 27 budgets to pay for a Magistrate; and
Whereas, Chief Judge Miriam A. Perry has appointed Nancy Wang as Magistrate of the 15th Judicial District;
RESOLVED, That the Ann Arbor City Council hereby approve the appointment of Nancy Wang as Magistrate of the 15th Judicial District effective this date.
