Commission on Disability Issues
Established on 11/4/69 by Resolution No. R-515-11-69 (formerly Committee on the Problems of the Handicapped).
Reestablished June 6, 1983 as "Mayor's Commission on Handicapper Concerns".
Name changed to "Ann Arbor Commission on Handicapper Concerns" and membership composition revised by Council resolution August 18, 1986.
Current name approved by Council resolution July 1, 1991.
Composition and terms changed by Council resolution April 1, 2002.
Composition and terms amended by Council resolution R-14-251 on July 21, 2014.
Bylaws amended on March 10, 2016 by 16-0246 , which clarifies membership requirements.
Purpose
To promote and advocate for equal opportunities for all individuals with physical, mental and/or emotional disabilities.
Special Qualifications for Appointment
Leadership skills to provide direction and set policy for 3 program members who coordinate special change/improvement projects.
Length of Terms
3-year terms, which shall be staggered so that approximately 1/3 of the member's terms expire each year.
City Council representative shall be appointed annually.
Meeting Times and Frequency
This is a permanent commission which meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 3:15 p.m. in the Council Chamber.
Membership/Committee Composition
The Commission shall consist of not more than 13 members, 12 of whom shall be citizens appointed by the Mayor with the approval of City Council and 1 of whom shall be a member of the City Council appointed by City Council in accordance with its adopted procedures for Council appointments to boards and commissions.
The City Council representative shall be a voting member of the Commission with all rights and privileges of membership.
At least 9 of the 13 positions on the Commission are reserved for persons who have a disclosed disability as defined in the federal Americans with Disabilities Act, 41 U.S.C. Section 12102, as amended.
