PROCLAMATION
ONE Campaign
April 4th, 2011
 
 
WHEREAS,      Approximately 925 million people across the world are hungry, an increase from 80 million in 2008; and
 
WHEREAS,      World food prices are 50% higher now than they were six months ago; and
 
WHEREAS,      Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for 24% of the global disease burden; and
 
WHEREAS,      Due to programs like the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria, 3.9 million people in Africa are receiving antiretroviral treatment for HIV, up from just 50,000 in 2002; and
 
WHEREAS,      The international community has the solutions to eradicate extreme poverty and end preventable disease but is lacking the political will to provide the necessary resources and support; and
 
WHEREAS,      ONE is a nonpartisan grassroots advocacy and campaigning organization that fights extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa, by raising public awareness and pressuring political leaders to support smart and effective policies and programs that are saving lives, helping to put kids in school and improving futures; and
 
WHEREAS,      Citizens of Ann Arbor are among the most passionate, innovative and intellectual people in the world; and
 
WHEREAS,      The work of Ann Arbor citizens and ONE members to educate fellow citizens and engage with the key issues facing our society today indicates a strong and enduring commitment to justice and equality across the globe.
      
NOW THEREFORE, I, John Hieftje, Mayor of Ann Arbor, Michigan, do hereby, proclaim Ann Arbor, Michigan to be a City of ONE.
