Resolution to Approve S. State Street Closing for the University of Michigan’s John F. Kennedy Peace Corps Celebration - October 14, 2010
Memorandum
Attached for your consideration and approval is a request from the University of Michigan to close S. State Street from S. University to E. William from 1:00 A.M. to 3:00 A.M. and 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 14, 2010 for the John F. Kennedy Peace Corps Celebration.

In honor of the Peace Corps’ 50th anniversary, the University has planned two events. The first will be a meeting from 2:00 to 2:30 A.M. on the Michigan Union steps on the same date and hour of JFK’s speech to 5,000 assembled UM students. The program will include a performance by the UM Educational Theater Company that tells the story of JFK, UM and the Peace Corps. The second will begin at 11:00 A.M. on the Union steps in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of JFK’s speech that led to the creation of the Peace Corps. Special guest speakers will include Senator Harris Wofford, Jack Hood Vaughn, Aaron Williams, Julia Darlow, Mary Sue Coleman and Jennifer Granholm.

The sponsor agrees to obtain all necessary permits, to provide evidence of proper liability insurance as required, to comply with all City regulations governing the use of the streets and will reimburse the City for all event expenses.

Notification of the street closings will be provided through the City’s website.

The event has been coordinated with all relevant City service units for the purposes of traffic control and for the protection of the health and safety of the participants and the general public.
