Main Street Business Improvement Zone Election Results
Memorandum
On January 4, 2010, City Council adopted a Resolution to Approve the Main Street Business Improvement Zone (BIZ) and Zone Plan and ordered an election pursuant to Michigan Public Act 120 of 1961, as amended, to allow eligible property owners to adopt, or not adopt, the proposal, including the Zone Plan.
Following Council approval, a ballot by mail election was established and conducted by the City Clerk's Office. Ballots were mailed to eligible property owners at the end of January and were due back to the City Clerk by March 1, 2010.
The canvass of the returned ballots was completed on Wednesday, March 3 by the City Clerk, City Assessor and City Attorney. Of the 56 eligible property owners, 32 completed ballots by the deadline, with an overwhelming majority of those voting in support of the BIZ Initiative (95.9%). The election was the final step required for the establishment of the BIZ district, which will now operate for seven years beginning July 1, 2010.
