Whereas, The Charter of the City of Ann Arbor requires the City Council to hire the position of City Attorney;

Whereas, The position of City Attorney is one of two positions directly reporting to the City Council and, as attorney and counsel for the City, it is a position integral to the proper functioning of the City;

Whereas, The City Attorney announced on January 4, 2021 his intent to retire in 2022 and then provided a target date of retirement of April 30, 2022 to the City Administration Committee, with an exact date to be set by the City Attorney;

Whereas, The City Council recognizes that a search for a replacement may take significant time and effort;

Whereas, The City Council by Resolution R-21-208 authorized the hiring of Consultant Amy Cell to assist the City Council with the search process;

Whereas, Consultant Amy Cell provided a search timeline, a job description, a talent rubric, and a salary range for the position;

Whereas, On July 20, 2021, by Resolution R-21-276, the City Council approved the search timeline and process;

Whereas, The City Council specifically intended by this timeline and process for there to be an overlap in employment between the City Attorney and the hired candidate;

Whereas, Consultant Amy Cell has brought confidential resumes from prospective candidates to the City Council for review;

Whereas, The City Council has reviewed these resumes in closed session on September 27, 2021; and

Whereas, The City Council in open session now identifies finalist candidates that it wishes to further consider in the search process;

RESOLVED, That the search process for the position of City Attorney continue with candidates #5 and #8.
