Resolution to Approve Street Closure for 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Saturday, September 11, 2021

The attached resolution is to approve a request from the City of Ann Arbor Fire Department to close North Fifth Avenue between Ann Street and Huron Street. This closure would be effective at 8:30 AM and end at 11:30 AM on Saturday, September 11, 2021.
The applicant, the City of Ann Arbor Fire Department, will be hosting a ceremony on Saturday, September 11, 2021 beginning at 9:45 AM to honor the 343 firefighters from the Fire Department of New York who lost their lives twenty years ago. The ceremony will be in front of Fire Station 1 on North Fifth Avenue between Ann Street and Huron Street. Members of the public are welcome to attend. The ceremony is planned to last approximately 45-minutes. The ceremony will be completely outside due to COVID-19 precautions.
Notification of the street closing will be provided through the City’s website.
The event has been coordinated with all relevant City service areas for the purposes of traffic control and for the protection of the health and safety of the participants and the general public.

Whereas, On September 11, 2001, the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) engaged in the largest rescue effort in the history of the American fire service in response to the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center;
Whereas, During the rescue effort and because of the collapse of 1 World Trade Center (North Tower) and 2 World Trade Center (South Tower), 343 FDNY firefighters were killed. Also killed as part of the rescue effort at the World Trade Center were 23 City of New York police officers, 37 Port Authority of New York New Jersey police officers, and 8 private EMS workers;
Whereas, 2,565 civilians were killed when hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 were intentionally crashed into the north and south towers, or as a result of the crashes. At the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, 184 people were killed when hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the building. Near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, 40 passengers and crew members aboard United Airlines Flight 93 died when the plane crashed into a field;
Whereas, The City of Ann Arbor Fire Department will be hosting a ceremony on Saturday, September 11, 2021 to honor the 343 FDNY firefighters, along with all the others, who were killed twenty years ago;
Whereas, The ceremony will be in front of Fire Station 1 on North Fifth Avenue between Ann Street and Huron Street. Members of the public are welcome to attend. The ceremony is planned to last approximately 45-minutes; and
Whereas, The entire ceremony will occur outside on North Fifth Avenue between Ann Street and Huron Street to follow precautions for COVID-19;
RESOLVED, That City Council approve the closing of North Fifth Avenue between Ann Street and Huron Street on Saturday, September 11, 2021 from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM.
