Resolution Opposing the Closure of the Post Office Station Located at 1210 South University Avenue

Whereas, The United States Postal Service (“USPS”) is contemplating the closure of the post office at 1210 South University (the “South University Station”);Whereas, The USPS has solicited public comment on the potential closure of the South University Station;

Whereas, The South University Station is located in close proximity to thousands of University of Michigan students and permanent residents, many of whom do not have access to motorized vehicles;

Whereas, The structure set forth in the approved site plan for 601 South Forest Avenue would, if built, add approximately 610 beds within one block of the South University Station;

Whereas, Ann Arbor’s A2D2 zoning plan will set the groundwork for increased residential density and commercial development in the South University area;

Whereas, The closure of the South University Station would necessitate that current and future users of the South University Station obtain postal services elsewhere;

Whereas, The nearest alternative post office, located at 200 East Liberty (“Liberty Street Station”), is approximately one mile away from the South University Station; and

Whereas, The distance of the Liberty Street Station from the South University Station renders its use by current and future South University Station users, many of whom do not have access to motorized vehicles, unduly impractical and highly burdensome;

RESOLVED, That the Ann Arbor City Council opposes the proposed closure of the South University Station, and urges the USPS to keep the South University Station open, and further urges United States Representative John Dingell and United States Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow to oppose the proposed closure of the South University Station, and to diligently lobby the USPS to maintain the South University Station in full operation; and
