Electric Vehicle Readiness Ordinance

WHEREAS, the City has adopted a goal to achieve community-wide carbon neutrality by 2030; and

WHEREAS, transportation takes up at least 18% of Ann Arbor’s greenhouse gas inventory; and

WHEREAS, electric vehicles are the most promising pathway to decarbonize the transportation sector which will be required to meet the carbon neutrality goal of 2030; and

WHEREAS, projections from reputable research firms suggest that there will be between 40,000 and 60,000 electric vehicles on Ann Arbor roads by 2030; and

WHEREAS, the City needs new EV charging infrastructure to meet the rising demand and to promote electric vehicles; and

WHEREAS, buildings constructed now will likely have a life span of at least 40 years; and

WHEREAS, it is significantly cheaper to build-in EV infrastructure while a development is being planned as opposed to retrofitting buildings and garages after the fact;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Environmental Commission supports the Electric Vehicle Ordinance as drafted by the Electric Vehicle Work Group of the Energy Commission; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Environmental Commission urges Council to adopt the new ordinance and to allocate enough staff time to launch the ordinance and educate the public.
