Memorandum

The City received the attached notice from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission that Sodexo Management, Inc. has applied for a National Sporting Event License for August 2, 2014.

This is a special non-quota liquor license.  Under the provisions of MCL 436.1531(7) Sodexo Management, Inc., as the lessee/concessionaire of the University of Michigan, qualifies for a license under the provision that allows for the issue of a liquor license in conjunction with a professional international soccer match.  MCL 4361531(7) further provides and requires that application for the sporting event license must be a (i) contest between 2 international soccer clubs that are part of a tournament sanctioned by a not-for-profit association that is the governing body for soccer in the United States, (ii) the event is organized and promoted by a match agent that is licensed by the international governing body for soccer, and (iii) the concessionaire has entered into an agreement granting it control of the licensed premises for the purposes of complying with this act and rules promulgated under this act regarding the sale of alcoholic liquor.

Issuance of the license does not require City Council approval.  Under MLCC Administrative Rules the Commission will consider, however, comments from Council or the City police if any are submitted.

Notice of the ability to comment has been provided to the Ann Arbor Police.
