Body
Whereas, The Deferred Action for Child Arrivals Program (“DACA”) has offered millions of youth the opportunity to come out of the shadows and live free from fear of imminent deportation;
Whereas, DACA recognizes that children should not be punished for the actions of their parents;
Whereas, On January 17, 2017, City Council urged then President Obama and its representatives to take action to protect DACA (R-17-018);
Whereas, Congress has failed to act to make the DACA program permanent;
Whereas, On September 5, 2017, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that the Trump administration will immediately begin to phase out the DACA program over the next six months;
Whereas, Abandoning DACA Youth would leave families in disarray and danger of being torn apart and undermine trust in the government; and
Whereas, Congress has a legal and moral obligation to find a legislative solution to prevent the deportation of the approximately 800,000 children of undocumented immigrants, known as “Dreamers;”
RESOLVED, That Ann Arbor City Council urges our U.S. Representative for the District 12, Debbie Dingell, representing Ann Arbor and all Michigan congressional representatives, and the U.S. Senators for Michigan, Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters, and to take immediate action to protect the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals Program and the Dreamers so that they and their families can never be put through this cycle of fear again; and
RESOLVED, That the City Clerk be directed to send copies of this Resolution to the Representative Dingell and Senators Stabenow and Peters.
