Resolution to Approve an Agreement with the Michigan Department of Transportation ($45,200.00) and Appropriate Funds to Establish a Project Budget for the Illuminated Street Name Signs Project ($98,610.00) (8 Votes Required)
Memorandum
Attached for your review and approval, please find a resolution to approve an agreement between the City and the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) for installation of Illuminated Street Name Signs at various signalized intersections within the City of Ann Arbor. The agreement is required so that this project can be performed as a federal aid project.

The project includes delivery and installation of illuminated street name signs on the existing traffic signal mast arms. Only signals installed with mast arms are included. Illuminated street name signs increase the visibility of street names and guide the traveling public to their destinations. The illuminated street name signs are seen from a farther distance than ordinary signs therefore they increase traffic safety. We estimate the construction cost at $225,800.00, and the total project cost at $279,210.00. Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2008 and continue until November 2008. Like all such projects, MDOT will award the construction contract and the City of Ann Arbor will act as the project engineer.

One requirement for this type of project is that the City enters into an agreement with the State stipulating the funding split and other rights and responsibilities of the parties. It is the same form of agreement that we have used on other federally funded projects. Federal Safety Fund will supply 80% of the participating construction cost, approx...
