Resolution to Approve Street Closure of Washington Street between Thayer and Fletcher Streets for the TEDxUofM event from 6:00 PM on Thursday, March 31, 2016 to 6:00 PM on Friday, April 1, 2016

Memorandum

The attached resolution is requesting approval to Washington Street between Thayer and Fletcher Streets for the TEDxUofM event from 6:00 PM on Thursday, March 31, 2016 to 6:00 PM on Friday, April 1, 2016.  The luncheon itself will start at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 1 and end at 2:00 PM with the additional time to be used for set-up and break-down of the event.

The sponsor, the TEDxUofM Foundation, is holding its annual conference in the Power Center, which draws 1400 participants each year.

TEDxUofM is a university-wide initiative to galvanize the community for an event like no other; filled with inspiration, discovery, and excitement. Borrowing the template from the world-renowned TED conference, TEDxUofM aims to bring a TED-like experience to the University of Michigan. The vision is to showcase the most fascinating thinkers and doers, the “leaders and best” in Michigan terms, for a stimulating day of presentations, discussions, entertainment, and art that will spark new ideas and opportunities across all disciplines.

The conference is all-day, with a break for lunch.  The plan will be to use Washington Street to have an outdoor luncheon for the large number of guests.

Notification of the street closure will be through the City’s website and GovDelivery, press releases and other resources through the University of Michigan.

The sponsor agrees to obtain all necessary permits, to provide evidence of proper liability insurance as required, to comply with all City and state regulations governing the use of the streets, and will reimburse the City for all event expenses.
