Memorandum
The attached resolution provides for the appointment of James E. White as the Ann Arbor Police Chief contingent upon the completion of a thorough background check process.

A national search developed candidates for the position of Police Chief and a thorough selection process involving police department personnel, community members, city managers, service area administrators, City Administrator, and City Attorney was conducted.

James E. White has served as an Assistant Police Chief for the Detroit Police Department, City of Detroit, Michigan since February 2013.

Prior to his appointment as an Assistant Chief of the Detroit Police Department, Mr. White progressed through the police ranks in Detroit, serving as Police Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Commander and Deputy Chief.

Mr. While holds an Associate of Arts, General Studies Degree from Wayne County Community College, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from Wayne State University and is currently pursuing a Master's of Science Degree in Counseling from Central Michigan University.

James E. White is qualified to serve and is recommended to Council for appointment as Ann Arbor Police Chief, upon completion of a successful background check and with an effective start date of January 11, 2016.
