Title

Resolution Directing Staff to Discuss a Possible Relocation of the Arthur Miller House with The University of Michigan and Other Stakeholders

Body

Whereas, The University of Michigan currently owns 439 S. Division, commonly referred to as the Arthur Miller House;

Whereas, The University has determined that the house per se is not central to the University’s mission, and solicited bids from the public to purchase and relocate for that house so it might be preserved;

Whereas, The City of Ann Arbor already has a Center for Local History, located within the Kempf House on S. Division;

Whereas, The City also possesses public land at the corner of Liberty and Division (Liberty Plaza), adjacent to the Kempf House;

Whereas, Relocating the Arthur Miller House, preserving and restoring its 19th century interior and exterior, and using that space to expand local history information and a variety of community services would be a public good and an appropriate use of public land; and

Whereas, Many details would need to be addressed before a decision could be made to relocate the Arthur Miller House on the public land at the corner of Liberty and Division;

RESOLVED, That the City Council wishes to explore the concept of acquiring the Arthur Miller House from the University of Michigan and of moving it from 439 S. Division to Liberty Plaza;

RESOLVED, That the City Administrator is directed to work with City Staff and the University of Michigan to determine the cost of such a relocation, potential funding sources necessary for the move, and the future costs and opportunities for managing this asset; and

RESOLVED, That the City Administrator report to Council by November 13 on the feasibility of acquiring the Arthur Miller House and the relocation of that building on a site at Liberty Plaza.
