PROCLAMATION
Drive Electric Week
September 15th-21st, 2014

WHEREAS, the City of Ann Arbor has adopted a Climate Action Plan to both mitigate and adapt to projected climate changes. The Climate Action Plan includes recommendations to encourage electric vehicles (EV's) and EV infrastructure; and

WHEREAS, the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) has recently installed 18 publicly-available EV charging stations at city-owned parking structures and the use at these stations has continued to grow every quarter since their installation; and

WHEREAS, the University of Michigan, Washtenaw Community College and other private businesses such as DTE and AAA have also installed EV charging stations for public and customer use; and

WHEREAS, electric vehicles are of significant economic importance to Michigan because they are designed and manufactured by Michigan companies and Michigan is a center for advanced battery research and development; and

WHEREAS, the week of September 15 is National Drive Electric Week and an all-day event to showcase Electric Vehicles and provide opportunities for test drives is planned for Briarwood Mall on September 19, 2014; and

WHEREAS, the City is providing new local planning guidelines to educate developers about EV demand and encourage them to install charging infrastructure when buildings are constructed or renovated; and

WHEREAS, a Drive Electric Ann Arbor Partnership (DEA2P) is forming to engage local stakeholders including the City, local NGOs, DTE, the University of Michigan, and local businesses on education around electric vehicles and collaborative approaches for expanding electric vehicle infrastructure in Ann Arbor consistent with our community's climate goals.
