Memorandum
   PROCLAMATION
Elizabeth R. Dean Day
      April 7, 2014
WHEREAS,      Upon her death on April 7, 1964, Elizabeth Russell Dean bequeathed nearly $2 million to the public trees of Ann Arbor, to be held in trust with the annual interest income to be used for the planting, care and maintenance of these trees; and
WHEREAS,      2014 marks the 50th anniversary of this generous gift to the City's trees; and
WHEREAS,      Elizabeth R. Dean Day was established on April 7, 1998 by resolution of City Council and Mayor; and  
WHEREAS,         Ann Arbor's urban and community forest provides millions of dollars in benefits to the community each year, including reducing stormwater run-off, improving air and water quality and beautifying the city; and
WHEREAS,       the Elizabeth Dean trust has contributed to these benefits by funding the planting of more than 5,400 trees along city streets, and parks and the care and maintenance of thousands of trees throughout the City; and   
WHEREAS,      Elizabeth R. Dean Day serves as a reminder of the vast contributions Ms. Dean made to ensure that Ann Arbor will forever remain a "City of Trees."  
NOW THEREFORE, I, John Hieftje, Mayor of Ann Arbor, Michigan, do hereby, proclaim April 7, 2014 as Elizabeth R. Dean Day in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
