Resolution to Approve the Purchase of a Wood Chipper from Bandit Industries, Inc. - State of Michigan bid ($83,208.00)
Memorandum
The attached resolution authorizes the purchase of a Bandit model 1990XP diesel engine powered wood chipper. The unit will be used by the Public Services Area, Field Operations Unit.

The wood chipper will replace a 2002 wood chipper used by the Public Services Area, Field Operations Unit - Forestry group. This wood chipper is used for tree removals, tree trimming and storm clean ups. The unit is a whole tree chipper as it will process a log up to 21 inches in diameter which allows staff to feed larger sections of a tree through the chipper in one piece.

Wood chipper number 6914 has been in service for 11 years and has over 4,100 hours of use with 35% of its total repair cost ($74,600.00) accrued in the last 2 ½ year of service. Because of its age and increasing repair cost this wood chipper is no longer reliable. This unit will be removed from service and sold at the next City auction.

Bandit Industries, Inc, Remus, MI, was awarded contract # 071B3200141 with the State of Michigan’s MiDeal program for forestry equipment.

This purchase follows the goals and guidelines of the City’s Green Fleet Policy to reduce the amount of fuel used and to pay a premium for “greener” equipment if necessary. This unit will be powered by a Tier 4 engine which meets the EPA current standard for diesel powered, off road equipment.

Adequate funds for this purchase are budgeted in the FY14 Fleet and Facility budget.

Bandit Industries, Inc. received Human Rights approval on January 22, 2014.
