Title
Communication from Senator Rebekah Warren regarding Exploratory Oil Drilling in Scio Township
Memorandum
The communication below and attached letter was received from State Senator Rebekah Warren on June 4, 2014:
Dear Clerk Beaudry,
Thank you for contacting me to share the Ann Arbor City Council's Resolution regarding the permit pending with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) that would allow for exploratory oil drilling in Scio Township. I appreciate hearing the Ann Arbor City Council's perspective on this important issue.
In my work as Minority Vice Chair of the Senate Natural Resources, Environment and Great Lakes Committee, I have consistently voiced the opinion that we must thoroughly and responsibly evaluate all possible consequences before moving forward with environmental policy at the state level. With that in mind, I believe the DEQ has a similar responsibility to our citizens.
In an effort to help ensure the DEQ is aware of the local concerns surrounding permit application #AI40053, Representative Gretchen Driskell, Representative Jeff Irwin and I submitted a joint statement to the agency's Office of Oil, Gas, and Minerals' Permits and Bonding Unit. Because of your investment in this issue, I thought you may be interested in reading our comments and have attached a copy of the letter to this e-mail.
Sincerely,
Rebekah Warren
State Senator
