Resolution to Approve a Change Order to the Construction Contract with Barrett Paving Materials, Inc. for Resurfacing Additional Streets in 2011 ($550,040.00)

Attached for your review and approval is a resolution to approve a change order to the construction contract with Barrett Paving Materials, Inc. in the amount of $550,040.00 to add more streets to the 2011 Street Resurfacing Project. The original contract ($3,710,952.75) includes the resurfacing/reconstruction of six major streets and six residential streets. As of mid-July, the project is ahead of schedule which offers the opportunity to resurface more streets before the end of the 2011 construction season.
Proposed Extra Street Work:
Spring Street
After advertising the construction contract for the 2011 Street Resurfacing project in the winter, and in response to new pavement failures at Spring Street (Summit to Sunset), we revised the construction plans and expanded the scope of the construction on this street. The southern end of Spring St. was completely reconstructed with a substantial quantity of new base materials, and the remaining stretch to Sunset was resurfaced to provide a consistent life cycle for the block. The work was completed in June 2011.
Miller Avenue
In the last two years we light resurfaced (milled and filled the top layer of asphalt) the inbound lane of Miller Ave between Chapin St and Seventh St, and reconstructed the section between N. Main St and Chapin St. We are now noticing some pavement failures in the outbound lane of Miller Ave between Seventh St and Chapin. To extend the life of this section of the road we would like to make some permanent repairs and apply a light resurfacing method the outbound lane. We also plan to patch the section of Miller Ave between Seventh and Newport. In 2013 we plan to reconstruct Miller Ave between Newport Rd and N. Maple Rd.
