This resolution recommends the approval of Amendment #1 of the sub-contract with the University of Michigan for the Leadership Membership with MCity Project and acceptance of the additional funds under the agreement for the City Ann Arbor's work in support of the project.
The $2.6 million project was originally awarded to the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) from MCity (via Regents of the University of Michigan) as a continuation of the USDOT project Ann Arbor Connected Vehicle Test Environment under USDOT Contract No. DTF-H61-15-H-00005; the City of Ann Arbor participated as a partner in the project. Previous City participation in these efforts was approved by City Council via Resolutions R-13-127, R-15-313, R-18-492, and R-19-247. The University of Michigan is requesting the continued support of the City of Ann Arbor in the research and testing environment developed under those projects. Funds for this project are from MCity Leadership Circle Members.
The safety pilot model deployment installed by UMTRI is an important part of USDOT's Intelligent Transportation Systems safety research program. It involves a large scale test of "Connected Vehicle" technologies in a real world, multimodal setting that UMTRI has established in Ann Arbor. Each participating vehicle was equipped with a mix of integrated, retrofit, and aftermarket Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) based safety systems. UMTRI's program enabled wireless communications among the participating vehicles and between those vehicles and roadside equipment, which in turn generates data.
