Memorandum
PROCLAMATION
Honoring Dr. Joan M. Doughty, Ph.D.
October 16, 2017
WHEREAS, Joan Doughty is retiring after fifteen years of tireless and visionary leadership as the Executive Director of Community Action Network; and
WHEREAS, Joan developed and promoted CAN’s mission of partnering with children, youth and families from under-resourced Washtenaw County communities to create better futures for themselves, and to improve the communities in which they live; and
WHEREAS, Joan worked with staff, community partners and volunteers to develop CAN’s core programs of Educating Youth, Stabilizing Families, and Building Strong Communities; and
WHEREAS, Joan pioneered CAN’s summer camps that are designed to prevent summer loss of learning in a supportive and fun environment and implemented comprehensive after school programs, which resulted in a high school graduation rate of 97% for the students served by CAN; and
WHEREAS, Joan established Community Action Network as a leader in programs for school-aged youth development; and
WHEREAS, The programs that CAN developed at its first site, Hikone Community Center, are now also offered at the Bryant, Hikone and Green Baxter Court Community Centers; and
WHEREAS, CAN has recently extended its successful programs at Mitchell Elementary in Ann Arbor, Brick Elementary in the Lincoln Schools, and the Arrowwood Hills Community Center; and
WHEREAS, Joan has been an unrelenting and joyous crusader for social justice for young people and families in this community.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Christopher Taylor, Mayor of Ann Arbor, Michigan, do hereby honor Joan Doughty and proclaim October 16, 2017, as “Joan Doughty Day” in the City of Ann Arbor.
