Resolution Recognizing Ann Arbor Active Against ALS as a Civic Nonprofit Organization Operating in Ann Arbor for the Purpose of Obtaining a Charitable Gaming License
Memorandum
To obtain a charitable gaming license under Michigan law, a nonprofit organization is required to submit a resolution from its local governing body recognizing it as a community-based organization.
Ann Arbor Active Against ALS is a new 501(c)3 non-profit organization created by friends and colleagues of Ann Arbor residents Bob Schoeni and Gretchen Spreitzer to support finding a cure for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. ALS is a disease that paralyzes the body but leaves the mind intact. Symptoms of ALS include twitching and cramping of muscles, impaired use of the arms and legs, weakness and fatigue, slurred or thick speech and difficulty breathing or swallowing. Most ALS patients are in a wheelchair and using a ventilator within a few of years of diagnosis.
Passage of the attached resolution will allow Ann Arbor Active Against ALS to host a Family Square Dance (with raffle drawing) at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds on Friday, May 8, 2009 as part of their fundraising efforts for this year. This resolution is required in order to obtain final approval from the Charitable Gaming Division of the Bureau of State Lottery for the event.

Whereas, P.A. 382 of 1972, as amended, requires that local civic nonprofit organizations be recognized by resolution adopted by the local governmental subdivision in which the organization conducts its principal activities and that a copy of said resolution be filed with any application for a license to conduct a bingo, raffle or charity game(s);
Whereas, Ann Arbor Active Against ALS has requested that it be recognized as a nonprofit organization operating in the community for the purpose of obtaining a charitable gaming license; and
Whereas, Ann Arbor Active Against ALS is a local civic nonprofit organization as defined by P.A. 382 of 1972, as amended, which should be recognized for its efforts to support research to find a cure for ALS;
RESOLVED, That City Council hereby approve recognition of Ann Arbor Active Against ALS as a local civic nonprofit organization operating in the Ann Arbor community for the purposes of its charitable gaming license application as required by P.A. 382 of 1972, as amended; and
RESOLVED, That the City Clerk be directed to provide a certified copy of this Resolution to Ann Arbor Active Against ALS and to take all necessary administrative actions to provide notice of this Resolution to the Charitable Gaming Division, Michigan Department of Treasury.
