Resolution Recognizing the Mitchell School Parent-Teacher Organization, Inc. as a Civic Nonprofit Organization Operating in Ann Arbor for the Purpose of Obtaining a Charitable Gaming License

Memorandum

To obtain a charitable gaming license under Michigan law, a nonprofit organization is required to submit a resolution from its local governing body recognizing it as a community-based organization.

 

The Mitchell School Parent-Teacher Organization, Inc. is a 501(c)3 civic nonprofit organization with a mission to foster close relationships between the home and the school and provide volunteer and financial support for parents and teachers to work cooperatively in the development and education of children at Mitchell Elementary School. They welcome and embrace Mitchell families and promote inclusive membership regardless of race, sex, class, sexual orientation, age, socioeconomic status, religion, or ability. Mitchell PTO strives to promote participation in broader educational programs in our community.

 

Passage of the attached resolution will allow the Mitchell School Parent-Teacher Organization, Inc. to hold a raffle on October 28, 2022. Passage of this resolution is required in order to obtain final approval from the Charitable Gaming Division of the Bureau of State Lottery for this event and any future events.

Body

Whereas, P.A. 382 of 1972, as amended, requires that local civic nonprofit organizations be recognized by resolution adopted by the local governmental subdivision in which the organization conducts its principal activities and that a copy of said resolution be filed with any application for a license to conduct a bingo, raffle or charity game(s);

 

Whereas, The Mitchell School Parent-Teacher Organization, Inc. has requested that it be recognized as a nonprofit organization operating in the community for the purpose of obtaining a charitable gaming license; and

 

Whereas, The Mitchell School Parent-Teacher Organization, Inc. is a local civic nonprofit organization as defined by P.A. 382 of 1972, as amended, which should be recognized for its support of parents and teachers in the Mitchell Elementary School community as well as educational programs in the Ann Arbor community as a whole;

 

RESOLVED, That City Council hereby approve recognition of the Mitchell School Parent-Teacher Organization, Inc. as a local civic nonprofit organization operating in the Ann Arbor community for the purposes of its charitable gaming license application as required by P.A. 382 of 1972, as amended; and

 

RESOLVED, That the City Clerk be directed to provide a certified copy of this Resolution to the Mitchell School Parent-Teacher Organization, Inc. and to take all necessary administrative actions to provide notice of this Resolution to the Charitable Gaming Division, Michigan Department of Treasury.
