Resolution Recognizing Michigan Peaceworks as a Civic Nonprofit Organization Operating in Ann Arbor for the Purpose of Obtaining a Charitable Gaming License
Memorandum
To obtain a charitable gaming license under Michigan law, a nonprofit organization is required to submit a resolution from its local governing body recognizing it as a community-based organization.
The Michigan Peaceworks is a local nonprofit grassroots organization dedicated to peace, civil rights, and civil liberties. Michigan Peaceworks achieves its mission by undertaking education and action on local and state levels to influence U.S. foreign and domestic policy. Michigan Peaceworks, in carrying out its purpose, focuses its talents and energies in the following goal areas:
- Provide accurate information and analysis about the "War on Terrorism" and nonviolent
alternatives.
- Through our Youth Activist Network and internship program, recruit and train future social
activists.
- Build a statewide peace network for the purpose of advancing joint action campaigns.
- Build coalitions with groups of similar values and goals.
- Expand the definition of "peace" to include: the ability to live free of all types of violence,
harassment, and discrimination.
- Foster and promote a viable community organizing model (a philosophy, style of work, and goals
that serve to mobilize community action).
- Conduct outreach to build the Michigan Peaceworks base of support.
- Create and maintain a safe space for dissent.
Passage of the attached resolution will allow the Michigan Peaceworks to host a Poker night at Belmark Lanes in order to fundraiser money to further its mission. This resolution is required in order to obtain final approval from the Charitable Gaming Division of the Bureau of State Lottery for the event.

Whereas, P.A. 382 of 1972, as amended, requires that local civic nonprofit organizations be recognized by resolution adopted by the local governmental subdivision in which the organization conducts its principal activities and that a copy of said resolution be filed with any application for a license to conduct a bingo, raffle or charity game(s);
Whereas the Michigan Peaceworks has requested that it be recognized as a nonprofit organization operating in the community for the purpose of obtaining a charitable gaming license; and
Whereas, The Michigan Peaceworks is a local civic nonprofit organization as defined by P.A. 382 of 1972, as amended;
RESOLVED, That City Council hereby approve recognition of the Michigan Peaceworks as a local civic nonprofit organization operating in the Ann Arbor Community for the purposes of its charitable gaming license application as required by P.A. 382 of 1972, as amended; and
RESOLVED, That the City Clerk be directed to provide a certified copy of this Resolution to the Michigan Peaceworks and to take all necessary administrative actions to provide notice of this Resolution to the Charitable Gaming Division, Michigan Department of Treasury.
