Resolution to Approve a Purchase Order with Alert Emergency Equipment for the Purchase of Personal Protection Equipment ($35,719.65)

The attached Resolution requests Council approval of a contract with Alert Emergency Equipment for the purchase of personal protection equipment for Fire Department personnel.
The personal protection equipment is custom manufactured for each individual firefighter, ensuring the have complete protective coverage during high hazard fire suppression activities. This made-to-order gear complies with all current laws and regulations concerning fire fighters protective clothing. The City needs to purchase 17 sets and one additional replacement coat to maintain its gear replacement schedule as well as new issue requirements.
The Fire Department is recommending acquisition of the personal protective equipment from Alert Emergency Equipment. This is a sole source purchase to continue to ensure uniformity with existing in-service equipment. A single personal protection equipment design provides quick identification of City firefighters in multi-jurisdictional events. Additionally, Alert Emergency Equipment is the state-authorized vendor for protective clothing for fire personnel for morning pride, the manufacturer of the department selected equipment.
Funding for this purchase is available within the approved budget for fiscal year FY09. Alert Emergency Equipment has received Human Rights approval on 21 Nov 2008. Approval of the purchase is recommended.

Whereas, The Ann Arbor Fire Department has determined it is necessary to replace certain personal protective equipment ("turnout gear") for fire personnel as well as acquire initial issue for new hires;
Whereas, Federal and State regulations have been adopted to ensure uniform safety standards for the personal protective equipment used by fire fighters in performance of their duties;
Whereas, The safety of City fire personnel is enhanced by acquisition of easily identifiable, uniform turnout gear in multi-jurisdictional events;
Whereas, Alert Emergency Equipment, the City's current provider is the State-authorized vendor of morning Pride, a leading manufacturer in the industry of personal protection equipment;
Whereas, Acquisition of equipment from Alert Emergency Equipment, as a sole source provider, will ensure the City with a uniform personal protective equipment inventory, which meets or exceeds all federal and state regulations concerning fire fighter personal protective equipment;
Whereas, Alert Emergency Equipment received Human Rights approval on November 21, 2008; and
Whereas, Funding for this purchase is available in the FY09 approved budget for the Fire Department;
RESOLVED, That City Council approve a purchase order with Alert Emergency Equipment in the amount of $35,719.65 for the purchase of personal protection equipment for the Ann Arbor Fire Fighters; and
RESOLVED, That the City Administrator be authorized and direction to take all necessary actions to implement this Resolution.
